The silky-matte tiles have a colour similar to the Herbarium’s off-white mounting paper and, like the mounting paper. Here, the specimens are colourful, radiant glazed leaf forms and scattered iridescent hand-painted golden fan shapes adorned with a selection of Darwin’s plant material and British flowers from the Herbarium: dark red poppies and yellow roses. Arranged as if adrift, the sense of movement in the floral motifs recalls the maps and memoria from Darwin’s travels.
